As our world moves through a global pandemic, the reality remains that certain inequities are still prevalent. Gender discrimination, the fight for women equality, the vicious cycle of poverty and marginalization – are all still painful realities of our world. We then wonder what is our part creating a more equal world? What are some steps that we can take to help level the playing field?
- Educate yourselves – Is there a topic you feel passionate about? Read, ask, and research. Find out more about the roots of oppression. Understand how to be a better ally to the LBGTQIA+ community. Read up on women’s rights. Research on the impact of climate change in our world and see what you can do about it. What is the food crisis? How are children victims to adversities? What is the status of the migrant issue? Pick a topic, and educate yourself.
- Open-mindedness – Normalize the fact that we may not know everything or that a previously held notion may not be true. Lets be open to discussions, healthy debates, learning, letting go (even if you may have been a part of the problem earlier), willing to change and adapting to varied perceptions and opinions.
- Navigate the space – What can you do? Donate? Support petitions? Volunteer? Make conscious lifestyle choices? Be better allies? Offer a shoulder? Be an activist for women issues? In the age of social change, there are plenty of small and big ways in which one can help towards building a rightful, equal, and harmonious society. Identify ways in which you would like to be the change you want to see.
If all of us recognize that we have the power to do our bit, change may just be around the corner.
