Poverty, as we know it, is a complex problem with various causes. There are many types of poverty that exist in our world in the form of hunger, lack of shelter, in equal distribution of incomes that lead to lack of access to schooling, health, sanitation, food insecurity, employment, etc.
The United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) first Sustainable Development Goal is to eradicate poverty in all its forms. Eradicating poverty remains one of the greatest challenges faced by humankind. Currently, 10% of our population lives in extreme poverty i.e, living with an income of less than $1.90 (Rs. 150) per day.
While rapid growth and development has lifted millions out of poverty, the progress remains uneven. As the UNDP states, “new threats brought on by climate change, conflict and food insecurity, mean even more work is needed to bring people out of poverty”.
With the current COVID-19 pandemic, the poorest sections of our population are likely to face most trouble. While governments have enforced major restrictions on the lives of citizens to contain the spread of the virus, the poorest of our country have taken the biggest hit. Strict lockdown measures have definitely supported the containment of the virus however; it has heavily impacted the security of over thousands of daily wagers in our country.
